We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced 990 Reviewer Manager to join our team. This role is responsible for reviewing and analyzing nonprofit tax returns (Form 990 series) to ensure accuracy, compliance with IRS regulations, and adherence to firm quality standards. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical accounting knowledge, nonprofit tax expertise, and the ability to mentor staff and communicate effectively with clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF, and related nonprofit tax filings for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with federal and state regulations
  • Analyze financial statements, schedules, and supporting documentation related to nonprofit organizations
  • Identify and resolve tax, accounting, and reporting issues during the review process
  • Ensure all returns meet internal quality control standards and filing deadlines
  • Provide guidance, feedback, and mentorship to tax staff and preparers
  • Research nonprofit tax regulations and communicate updates or changes to the team
  • Collaborate with clients to obtain missing information and answer questions regarding filings
  • Assist with IRS notices, audits, and correspondence related to nonprofit tax returns
  • Maintain knowledge of current nonprofit accounting standards and tax laws
  • Support process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and accuracy within the tax department
  • Direct management of 1-2 Staff-level Accountants

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CPA designation preferred
  • 5+ years of experience preparing and/or reviewing nonprofit tax returns, specifically Form 990 filings
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles and IRS regulations
  • Experience with tax preparation software and accounting systems
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Public accounting experience
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations of varying sizes and complexities
  • Familiarity with charitable organizations, foundations, and grant reporting requirements
