From Policy to Practice: Are your internal controls actually working?

Tuesday, December 1, 2026 11:00am – 12:00pm CST

Overview

Most nonprofits have internal controls in place, but having policies and procedures on paper does not always mean they are working as intended. Staff turnover, new technology, remote work, organizational growth, and changing responsibilities can all create gaps between documented procedures and day-to-day practice.

In this free webinar, we’ll explore how nonprofits can move beyond simply documenting internal controls to evaluating whether those controls are consistently followed and effective. You’ll learn how to identify areas where practice may have drifted from policy, assess whether key controls are functioning as intended, respond when gaps are identified, and determine when changes within your organization should prompt a reassessment of your control environment.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Explain why documented policies are only one component of an effective internal control environment.
  • Identify common circumstances that can cause internal control practices to drift from established policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate whether key internal controls are operating consistently and effectively.
  • Determine appropriate steps to address control gaps, weaknesses, or breakdowns.
  • Recognize organizational changes and other events that should trigger a review or update of internal controls.
