ID.me and IRS Identity Protection PIN Guide

Setting up ID.me and securing your IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) are key steps in protecting your personal information during the 2025 tax season. ID.me is the identity verification service the IRS uses to confirm who you are before granting access to online tools like transcripts or account information.

An IP PIN adds an extra layer of security by preventing someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number. Taxpayers who experienced identity theft, received an IRS notice, or want added protection can request an IP PIN each year. Your 2026 IP PIN must be included on your tax return to validate your identity.

Wegner CPAs recommends completing your ID.me setup and retrieving your IP PIN early to avoid filing delays. Use the resources in this section to verify your identity, request your 2026 IP PIN, and keep your tax information secure.

2025 Tax Season Frequently Asked Questions

What documents do I need to file my 2025 taxes?

To prepare your 2025 return, gather all income documents (W-2s, 1099s, K-1s), records of deductible expenses, mortgage interest statements, charitable contribution receipts, health insurance forms (1095-A/B/C), and any documentation related to credits such as education expenses or child/dependent care. Keeping these items organized will help ensure an accurate and timely filing.

For most individuals, the 2025 filing deadline is April 15, 2025.
Business deadlines vary:

  • S-corporations & partnerships: March 17, 2025

  • C-corporations: April 15, 2025
Extensions are available but do not extend the time to pay any taxes due.

Most taxpayers benefit from taking the standard deduction, especially with current deduction levels. You should consider itemizing if your total deductible expenses, such as mortgage interest, state and local taxes, medical expenses, or charitable contributions, exceed your standard deduction amount. Wegner CPAs’ tax professionals can help you evaluate which option results in the lowest tax liability.

Dependents typically fall into two categories: qualifying children and qualifying relatives. Each must meet IRS tests for relationship, residency, age, support, and income. Claiming eligible dependents may qualify you for certain credits, including the Child Tax Credit and Dependent Care Credit.

Common credits for individuals include:

  • Child Tax Credit
  • Earned Income Tax Credit
  • American Opportunity Tax Credit
  • Lifetime Learning Credit
  • Saver’s Credit

Eligibility depends on income, filing status, education status, and family situation.

Learn about new credits included in the One Big Beautiful Bill including No Tax on Tips and No Tax on Overtime.

You can track your refund using the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool. You’ll need your Social Security number, filing status, and exact refund amount. Updates occur daily, typically overnight.

ID.me verifies your identity so you can access IRS online tools securely. Once verified, you can retrieve your annual IP PIN, which prevents someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number. Your IP PIN must be included on your 2025 return if you opt in or are required to use one. Visit Wegner CPAs’ guide for more information.

When your return is ready, SafeSend Returns sends you a secure email link. After verifying your identity, the platform walks you through reviewing your documents, e-signing required forms, and downloading copies for your records.

Deductible business expenses generally include ordinary and necessary costs such as supplies, equipment, software, mileage, home office expenses, employee wages, rent, utilities, marketing, and professional services. Accurate recordkeeping is essential for claiming eligible expenses and reducing taxable income. Learn more about new tax provisions impacting businesses by reading our OBBBA overview.

Key business deadlines include:

  • S-corps and partnerships: March 17, 2025

  • C-corps: April 15, 2025
Businesses may file for a six-month extension, but any tax owed must still be paid by the original deadline to avoid penalties.

If your business paid $600 or more to a contractor in 2024, you must issue a 1099-NEC by January 31, 2025. This applies to independent contractors, freelancers, and service providers who were not treated as employees. New 1099 thresholds outlined in OBBBA take effect in tax year 2026.

Late filing or late payment can result in IRS penalties and interest. The failure-to-file penalty is typically higher than the failure-to-pay penalty, so filing on time, even if you can’t pay immediately, is recommended. Setting up a payment plan with the IRS can help reduce additional charges.

Effective December 24, 2025, postmarks now reflect only the date USPS processes a piece of mail, not necessarily the date it was mailed.

Many IRS deadlines rely on the long-standing “timely mailed, timely filed” rule. Under this rule, the postmark date generally determines whether your tax return or payment was sent on time. Because many processing centers now handle mail one day or more after collection, the postmark on your envelope may show a later date than when you actually dropped it in the mailbox.
