Paying your Wisconsin income taxes online is a straightforward and secure process. The Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) offers several electronic payment options, but if you want to avoid extra fees and minimize processing time, paying directly from your bank account using Quick Pay is the best choice. Wisconsin DOR also notes that its system uses secure encryption, making it safer than mailing a paper check.
This step-by-step guide walks through how individual taxpayers can make tax payments online using Wisconsin DOR’s Quick Pay system.
Step 1: Go to the Wisconsin DOR payment page
- Start by visiting the Wisconsin DOR online payment page.
- From there, look for the section “Individuals and Fiduciaries.”
- Select “Direct Debit, Credit Card, and Other Electronic Payments”
Step 2: Use Quick Pay (no login required)
From there, click the “Quick Pay” button to begin the payment process. Quick Pay allows you to make a payment without creating an account.
Quick Pay is ideal if you:
- Just need to make a one-time payment
- Don’t want to set up a login
- Prefer a fast, simple process
The other payment option requires creating a My Tax Account. These accounts offer additional features such as payment history, scheduling future payments, and receiving correspondence electronically. However, the set up process is more cumbersome. To set up your account, you will need additional information including a W-2 or 1099-R from the last three years, WI drivers license, your Wisconsin income from the past three years (can be found on prior year state returns). For more information on My Tax Account visit the FAQ page.
Step 3: Gather the information you’ll need
Have the following information ready before starting your payment:
- Your Social Security number (SSN), Taxpayer ID (ITIN), or Federal Employer ID Number
- Filing details (such as tax year, return information, payment amount)
- Your bank account and routing number
Quick Pay does not require registration, but you will need to enter identifying information to process the payment.
Step 4: Follow the prompts
Once you begin the payment process, the system will prompt you to submit information including the following:
- Identification and contact details
- Payment type, account, and timing
- Payment option
- Quick Pay also accepts third-party payment platforms including credit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, and more. However, these options result in additional fees, so we recommend paying directly through your bank account.
- Payment details
The process is fairly intuitive, and it should take about 5 minutes to get through the series of prompts.
Step 5: Submit your payment and saved your confirmation
Before finalizing your payment:
- Double-check your bank information
- Confirm the payment amount and tax year
The system will give you a chance to review and correct any errors before submitting. After submitting your payment:
- Save or print your confirmation number
- Keep any confirmation emails for your records
What about credit card or other payment options?
If you choose to pay by credit card, Apple Pay, PayPal, or CheckFreePay:
- A $1 transaction fee applies
- Credit cards and similar methods include a 2.25% processing fee
- CheckFreePay includes a $3 fee
These payments are processed through a third-party vendor, and Wisconsin DOR does not receive any portion of the fees. For additional information on third-party payments, visit the WI DOR’s FAQ page.
