Senior Accountant – Payroll | Madison Office

Position Mission

Under the general direction of the Payroll Operations Manager, The Senior Accountant-Payroll is responsible for the Payroll Tax, Accounting and Payroll Processing for multiple Wegner CPAs clients. In addition the Senior Accountant Payroll directly supervises the Payroll Specialists.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor assigned client payroll schedules.
  • Manage workflow to ensure all assigned client payroll transactions are processed accurately and timely.
  • Process complex payrolls for multiple Wegner CPAs clients including those with employees in multiple states.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual client federal, state and local payroll tax reports
  • Transmit 941, 940, 944 and 943 through third party software.
  • Calculate garnishment deductions and process for payment.
  • Set up general ledger journal entries for payroll clients.
  • Monitor due dates, confirm amounts and generate electronic tax payments through the Federal EFTPS Batch Filing program, and Wisconsin DOR, DWD and multiple state and local jurisdictions.
  • Receive, ticket and resolve Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Wisconsin Department of Revenue (WDR) and the Department of Workforce Development (DWD) notices.
  • Reconcile payroll discrepancies.
  • Prepare requested documentation for workers compensation and Wisconsin DWD audits.
  • Manage the client tax impound payables in Intacct.
  • Reconcile Payroll Trust bank account weekly.
  • Prepare monthly Departmental Financial reports.
  • Process New Hire Reports files for Wisconsin and multiple states weekly.
  • Weekly prepare State withholding tax payment files for transmission.
  • Maintain chargeback expense process – enter in Practice Management and record in Intacct.

Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting – CPA preferred

Required Skills and Experience

  • Two to four years related accounting experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work in a team oriented environment.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to multi-task while working in a time pressured, deadline specific environment

Certifications Required

CPA preferred; Certification as CPP to be completed in first year

Public Contact

Work requires interaction both by phone and face to face with clients and staff.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment-very limited exposure to physical risk.  Equipment used: computer, fax machine, telephone, postage machine, copier and scanner.

Physical Demands

Essential demands include sitting at a desk, working on a computer for long periods of time and using a telephone to communicate with clients and staff. Minimal standing is involved.

Work Hours

Typical business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Additional hours may be required during peak seasons.
